Service Manager / Lead Mechanic
Cross Country Sports is a locally owned outdoor specialty retailer in the heart of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. We’re passionate about getting people outside — winter and summer — and we’re looking for an experienced, motivated Service Manager / Lead Mechanic to run our repair shop and help keep our customers’ gear in peak condition.
What you’ll do
- Oversee and manage all service department operations, including scheduling, workflow, and quality control
- Perform expert-level repairs and tune-ups on bicycles, cross-country skis, snowshoes, and other specialty outdoor equipment
- Lead, train, and mentor junior service staff
- Communicate repair estimates, status updates, and recommendations to customers
- Maintain an organized, efficient, and safe shop environment
- Manage parts inventory, ordering, and vendor relationships for the service department
- Collaborate with retail staff to support customers’ overall gear needs
What we’re looking for
- 2+ years of experience as a bicycle mechanic or outdoor equipment technician (shop experience strongly preferred)
- Working knowledge of ski equipment, bindings, and tuning is a plus
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple repairs and deadlines simultaneously
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- A genuine passion for outdoor recreation and the Keweenaw lifestyle
- Leadership experience or willingness to step into a lead role
Schedule: Full-time or seasonal considered
Compensation: Competitive, based on experience
Perks: Employee discounts & gear benefits. Ask us about potential temporary housing.
Flexible arrangement: We’re open to the right candidate on a seasonal basis — whether that’s peak bike season season, winter ski season, or both. If you’re a skilled mechanic who loves the U.P. but isn’t looking for year-round work, we’d still love to talk.
