Group Ride Locations 2015
Pace: The whole group will break into several smaller groups based on your skill, distance of ride, and how hard you want to ride. On the road, riders ride in what is called a “pace line”. Check out this article from bicycling.com for the basics of road riding pace lines.
Etiquette and Skills: On the road, you may see potholes or other obstacles. Some riders will point downward at the obstacle to inform the riders behind them. Pass on the message. Stay close to the person in front of you to avoid an “accordion” spread to the line of bikers, but far enough away that that you could stop or change direction to avoid an accident or obstacle in front. The group will stop at major forks in the trail or road. Always be sure to communicate the direction of a turn to the person behind you. You can point or call out, “left!” for example. This is a no-drop ride, so be sure that you can see the person in front and behind you. We aren’t going to leave anyone in the woods or out on the road.
Fashion: Helmets are always “in”. Other than head gear, wear whatever fashion suits you, but you may want to consider padded shorts/leggings, padded gloves, and a sweater to leave in your car or at the shop for afterward. The 2nd Annual Light the Night Fun Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2015. There will be a 5K that will begin at 7:45 pm and a FREE 1K for Kids starting at 7:15 pm. The Fun Run/Walk will begin and end at the Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital Courtyard located behind the hospital on 2nd Street in Laurium. The course will take you through the back streets of Laurium and along 4th & 5th Street in Calumet. Proceeds from this event will benefit The Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home.
Event details and schedule
- Packet Pick Up and Race Day Registration will be Saturday, September 19th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm near the start line at the Hospital Courtyard (the courtyard is located behind the hospital on 2nd Street).
- 5K Race Begins at 7:45 pm. The race will be a timed event but there will be no awards.
- The Kids 1K FREE race will begin at 7:15 pm. Kids can register for the 1K on RACE DAY ONLY from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. There will be no t-shirt for the kids race.
- All participants that register for the 5K and are age 11 or older, will receive a t-shirt, glow sticks and snacks.
- Children 10 and under that want to participate in the 5K run for free and can register the day of the race. They will receive glow sticks and snacks, but will not receive a t-shirt.
- Prize drawings will take place after the race is complete, so make sure you stick around to try and win some great prizes!!
- Attire you will need for the event include: bright/neon colored clothing and all things that glow! Get Creative!
