EVENT UPDATE: After enjoying the fresh air with 19 riders, several mine shafts, a conglomerate rock outcropping, Calumet Lake, and one turtle rescue, we headed to the Michigan House for dinner. Congratulations to the riders who received $25 gift certificates to the Michigan House for their riding in the month of May! The BIKE crew will be dreaming up new rider raffles for July.
Erika Vye gave an excellent tour of the geoheritage sites, teaching the recent (only 10,000 or so years ago) and ancient geological history of the Keweenaw. Barb Flanigan has worked with the Keweenaw National Park Service, and had a wealth of knowledge on the very recent history of the area. Do you know the difference between the Calumet/ Red Jacket copper bearing formations vs those near Copper Harbor? How about the location of one of the real motherlode shafts, Red Jacket No. 4?
On July 1st BIKE will be hosting another great ride. Stay tuned for details!
Join us, BIKE!, on an easy group ride as we celebrate the first month of the National Bike Challenge.
When: 6:00 PM, Monday, June 1
Where: starting in front of Cross Country Sports, Calumet
What: A leisurely tour of local geoheritage sites, followed by awards and chance to grab a bite at the Michigan House Cafe. A 90-minute ride is planned, but we’ll adjust as necessary. Geoheritage sites are places or areas of geologic features that also have significant scientific, educational, cultural, or aesthetic value.
