In a season where cabin fever is threatening to set in, we are desperate to enjoy the outdoors. However, conditions at this time of year can be tough to interpret. While we are still experiencing snow and cold temperatures, we also have sunny days with highs above freezing.
Every once in a while, the perfect recipe of snow, melt, and freezing temperatures align to create epic fat biking conditions. When our incredible, deep snow base becomes infused with rainwater or melt from a warm day and then re-freezes—we get crust. So far this year, Mother Nature hasn’t presented us with the right amount of melt and freeze, but we are still hopeful.
Crust conditions are a fat biker’s dream. The crust creates a firm but grippy go-anywhere riding surface so you can ride places you just can’t in the summer.
Crust conditions like this are elusive and don’t happen every winter. But when they do, it’s like no other riding.
Keep an eye out for crust riding this “spring.”
